A slight return to calm ends 2021

LUBBOCK, Texas (KCBD) – Slightly cooler temperatures are forecast this week – but still above average for the last few days of the year. More seasonal temperatures and a slight risk of humidity highlight my forecast for the New Years weekend.

While this afternoon will not be as hot as yesterday, temperatures will peak in the 60s and 70s. The weather will be mostly cloudy but not as windy. Afternoon winds of 10 to 20 mph will be common, although gusts of 20 to 30 mph are possible over the southwest observation area of the KCBD.

A small amount of humidity is possible during the night. Wet pavement (and other surfaces) is possible until Tuesday morning.

The rest of the week features a mix of cloud and sun, gusty winds and, although cooler, still above average temperatures.

Our coolest day this work week will be Thursday, with a low in the mid-1930s and a high in the mid-1960s.

From Tuesday to Thursday, strong gusty winds will sometimes contribute to critical prairie fire conditions and are likely to cause dust.

A slight chance of showers closes 2021 and begins 2022.

At present, there is some agreement between the medium-term computer forecast models for light showers in the region from approximately Friday afternoon through Saturday afternoon.

Right now my temperature forecast over this time frame (of a slight likelihood of precipitation) is above zero, at least around Lubbock and heading east and south of the central city. .

Ultimately, there is a low potential for precipitation on New Years Eve and New Years. With five and six days remaining, don’t be surprised to see changes in the forecast for the holiday weekend.
