As her reign comes to an end, Miss Michigan 2021 continues her career in pediatric oncology

MUSKEGON, MI — Vivian Zhong will soon have to hand over her Miss Michigan title in the upcoming scholarship pageant.

Out of 22 contestants, Zhong was crowned Miss Michigan 2021 in the 70th annual pageant on June 19, 2021 at Muskegon’s Frauenthal Center.

Zhong, 24, from Northville, was crowned Miss Michigan 2019 Mallory Rivard, who has been suppressing for two years after the 2020 event was canceled due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

As his reign draws to a close, Zhong said the months leading up to the 2022 competition were “bittersweet”.

“I know it’s time for another woman to hold the title and make an impact on her year,” Zhong said. “But it’s so sad because I’ve worked so hard for so long to get this title. And now that it’s finally coming to an end, it’s really so bittersweet, but I’m very excited for the next one. woman who will win this title to continue her journey of impact and leave a legacy of her own.

For the past nine months, Zhong has lived in California to pursue a career as a pediatric oncologist at Western University of Health Sciences.

Zhong’s social impact initiative during the competition was working with pediatric cancer patients, she said, which further enhanced her professional aspiration.

“It’s been a very rewarding year to be able to work with these kids on both sides – as a medical student and as Miss Michigan,” Zhong said. “With the pandemic still ongoing, I’ve been able to do a lot of Zoom visits to hospitals this year.”

Early in her reign as Miss Michigan, Zhong traveled to DeVos Children’s Hospital to see pediatric cancer patients and was able to raise funds for more research.

After competing in Miss American in December 2021 in Connecticut, Zhong said she traveled back and forth to attend various appearances in Michigan while attending medical school in California.

Last fall, Zhong returned to the University of Michigan for the first time since graduating in 2019. This time, she wore her Miss Michigan sash to take the field before the Michigan vs. Wisconsin football game. October 2.

In April 2022, she hosted the Best of Detroit Awards in Dearborn, where she met doctors, businesses, and businesses from across the state of Michigan.

“I know it’s time for another woman to hold the title and make an impact on her year,” Zhong said. “Now that it’s finally coming to an end, it’s really bittersweet, but I’m thrilled that the next woman to win this title is continuing her journey and leaving a legacy of her own.”

In this year’s competition from June 16-18 at Orchard View High School’s auditorium, Zhong will be on hand to help crown and present awards after performing her classical piano skill.

Zhong said she was excited to see the list of nominees and planned to continue her partnerships after stepping down from the crown.

“I competed for the Miss Michigan title five times,” Zhong said. “I’m so passionate about this organization and how it sets you up for success in the future. I don’t know how I’ll stay involved, but I want to encourage more young women to compete in this organization.
