NEGAUNEE — Dan Waterman has resigned as head coach of the Negaunee High School boys’ basketball team after leading the underage program for eight seasons.

The program’s opening became official at a meeting of the Negaunee Public Schools Board on Monday night. The NPS Facebook page posted the position as one of three coaching jobs open Wednesday morning, the other two being for freshman girls in middle school basketball and cross country.

“We are accepting applications for our head college basketball position,” Negaunee athletic director Paul Jacobson said in an emailed statement. “Coach Waterman has resigned as head coach of varsity boys’ basketball.”

Waterman took over the job in 2014, coming from Munising. He compiled a 123-50 record in Negaunee and won two MHSAA Class C district tournament titles and a Class C regional title.

Midway through his eight seasons in April 2018, Waterman was not renewed for the job by the NPS board, but around 50 people, including former players, came to a subsequent meeting to support his continued office, and the board reversed its decision of the previous week.

In four seasons at Munising, Waterman led the Mustangs to a 68-23 record and the program’s first district title since 1957.

He was also an assistant men’s basketball coach at Northern Michigan University and was the head men’s basketball coach at Westwood for three seasons.
