HIGHLIGHTS

  • Sanjana Ganesan gave a troll a taste of her own medicine after posting a nasty comment on her picture with husband Jasprit Bumrah
  • User had commented referring to India vs Pakistan game
  • Social media turned ugly following Super Four game as pacer Arshdeep Singh faced online abuse and hate
Negativity on social media has run rampant over the past few years as hateful comments and campaigns against a particular person and entity from all walks of life have sadly become normal. Cricketers have faced the same many times as they have suffered abuse and hate on social media due to their religion, and their families have also been subjected to hateful comments.

Something similar happened on Sunday night and Monday when India’s young guard Arshdeep Singh was the victim of social media hate after dropping a hold at critical moments in the match against Pakistan, which had an effect on the result of the match. Pakistan eventually won the match and Arshdeep faced rude comments on social media with people calling him a ‘Khalistani’. Several former and current cricketers including batting maestro Virat Kohli supported Arshdeep while Harbhajan Singh slammed users for criticizing one of their own so harshly.

The negative effects of the result were visible on social media as out of nowhere Sanjana Ganesan, TV presenter and wife of cricketer Jasprit Bumrah was on the wrong side of hate. Sanjana shared a throwback photo with Bumrah captioning, “just a nice #throwback pic of Jasprit, me and Jasprit’s sneakers (the real stars of this pic).”

Sanjana had mentioned in the caption that this was a throwback, if it wasn’t already clear, but somehow a user managed to connect the dots between the image and the India vs Pakistan match and posted a comment saying the team is losing on the cricket ground, but the couple have gone on vacation. Bumrah, who suffered a back injury while touring England, is currently undergoing rehab at the NCA in Bengaluru.

Sanjana was quick to call out the user’s ignorance, saying, “Photo back hai, dikhta nahi kya chomu aadmi (It’s a throwback pic, can’t you see, you fool).”

A few hours later, Sanjana posted a long message on her Instagram story saying it was important to stand up to trolls and bullies. Sanjana said dragging someone’s religion and identity into the case, referring to what happened with Arshdeep, is completely wrong and people who do this lack common sense. Sanjana further stated that she will continue to make the internet a better place by eliminating one fool at a time.
